Tiny House 2022 Competition
The House Within
Team: Vandy Cheang & Sophie Zhou (University of Melbourne)
With the rising cost of living exacerbated by a global pandemic, a lack of affordable housing is experienced by cities around the world. Therefore, this project aims to provide compact, easy and low cost construction housing that can be situated in any environment from urban to suburban to off-grid. Rather than aiming to connect with its context, these houses focus inwards to provide inhabitants with an internalised urban oasis. The adaptable nature of this housing type locates necessities in the centre, leaving the rest of the house completely customisable to adapt to different lifestyles.
The house is 8.4m x 3.3m wide was designed to be easily assembled and reconstructed using the modular structure while providing users with a highly flexible and functional wall to serve a small space. The central space within the house is 3.4m x 1.85m, houses the services and simultaneously acts as a buffer between the public and private space.
